Hundreds of Websites Are At Risk to be Attacked by Hackers: ‘Cryptojacking’

In recent days hackers have hunted hundreds of websites running the Content Management System (CMS) called DRUPAL with fraudulent software used to extract cryptocurrency monero.

In fact Troy Mursch, the security researcher behind the website Bad Packets Report, has uncovered the mentioned incident. On Saturday he reported that more than 300 sites had been discredited by hackers through installing the browser mining software Coinhive, which mines the cryptocurrency monero, by utilizing a defenselessness in an outdated version of the DRUPAL Content Management System (CMS).

Today “Cryptojacking” – has become a common problem. Although hackers were interested in ransom attacks – in which they would scramble data and demand ransoms of the victims in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency in order to decode it – they now highly catch websites with software that visitors’ computers to mine cryptocurrency on the attackers’ behalf.

Here are the affected sites:  the San Diego Zoo, the National Labor Relations Board, the City of Marion, Ohio, the University of Aleppo, the Ringling College of Art and Design and the government of Chihuahua, Mexico. Full list on spreadsheet.

Probably visitors of the affected websites do not even pay attention that their computers are running the cryptographic functions used to generate monero for hackers. That kind of attacks slow users computers down and even they can injure the processor.
