Management Shake-Ups In Facebook Leading To Blockchain Launching
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg requested one of the greatest management shake-ups in the social network history, giving more responsibility to his product officer and launching a blockchain division.
The main aim of shake-up is to strengthen and unite power at the spreading and developing internet company, though he did not include any layoffs or external employers and did not change the role of either Mr. Zuckerberg or Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.
In fact the company said that Chris Cox, the chief product manager responsible for the largest Facebook service, will now also monitor the widely used services such as Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
WhatsApp has received a freedom of action since 2014 after Facebook bought it for $ 22 billion, but in last months, its two co-founders have declared about their retirement, promoting closer integration.
The other two executives, chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer and vice president of growth Javier Olivan, are going to monitor other united and strengthened divisions, one of which is connected with “new platforms and infrastructure”, and the other with centralized services such as the ads system.
In the Facebook post the head of Messenger for the past four years David Marcus is abandoning that position to create a group to explore how to use blockchain technology across Facebook.
Blockchain is the largest technology that reinforces cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and it can offer various business applications as a ledger for recording transactions, even though Marcus said Facebook was “starting from scratch”.
Chris Daniels, who was responsible of Facebook’s efforts to widen Internet access, will be the head of WhatsApp, replacing Jan Kuma, co-founder of WhatsApp, who said last week that he is leaving the company.
A second WhatsApp co-founder, Brian Acton, left in September to start a foundation.
In fact Messenger and WhatsApp each has more than a billion users which make them the most widely used smartphone apps over the world.
Head of product at Instagram Kevin Weil is leaving his job to join Facebook’s blockchain division, and Adam Mosseri, head of the Facebook News Feed, will succeed Weil at Instagram, the company said.
