TELECOM REGULATOR OF INDIA HAS TESTED BLOCKCHAIN SYSTEM WITH IBM

On December 12th, the local edition of the Economic Times reported Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has successfully completed joint testing with IBM of blockchain technology application to optimize mobile data.

Vice President of IBM Research, Siram Raghavan said that the company has confirmed the concept and successfully conducted pilot projects with Telecom regulators and the largest companies in the industry. The expert explained that the developed blockchain application will allow companies to store MNP and DNC data on a closed distributed register “with the permission of users”, which will allow law enforcement agencies to get a better way to track crimes as well.

The representative of the industry regulator explained that at the moment telecommunication service providers enter into contracts with the companies to launch a blockchain system for data storage “within a few months”.

For the first time TRAI announced plans to introduce blockchain technology in May this year. The Agency plans to create a system that will eliminate fraud in the industry, as well as provide regulators with tools to track those who illegally call users for advertising.

Earlier in India, several government agencies began using a blockchain platform that provides a digital way to identify citizens, greatly simplifying the process: citizens of certain regions can now obtain a birth certificate and confirm their identity much faster.
