In The US, The Concealment Of User Data Leaks Will Be Punished With A Prison Sentence

The US Congress is working on a new draft law on the protection of user data, which provides for imprisonment for heads of companies for a period of 10 to 20 years for concealing personal data leaks.

Proposed by US Senator from Oregon, Ron Wyden, the new bill largely repeats the European GDPR (General data protection regulations). According to the document, the heads of the largest American IT companies will be obliged to report on the use and storage of user data. And the attempt to hide the fact of leakage of confidential information of users becomes the basis for prison term. The draft document is still under development, however, Senator Wyden has already published its working version for public discussion.

According to the company, whose annual income exceeds $ 1 billion, and the number of users-50 million people, will have to report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the United States on the measures taken to protect the collected data.

The bill describes the minimum requirements for data privacy protection and cybersecurity measures, in case of non-compliance with which companies will also face a fine of 4% of annual income. The document provides for the imprisonment of the heads of companies for concealing information about the incident of leakages or providing false information on this account. However, not all experts are positive about the European GDPR regulation that came into force in May.
